Media Release - Baker Airport
Runway Rehabilitation Project

The Lakes District Airport Society, Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako, and Village of Burns Lake are excited to announce that all of the funding for the Baker Airport Runway Rehabilitation Project is in place, and work is set to begin.

We would like recognize the funding partners, whose generosity has allowed for the resurfacing of the runway. Funding agencies who have whole-heartedly supported the project are:

  • Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure: BC Air Access Program
  • Federal Gas Tax Funds, RDBN Electoral Areas ‘B’ and ‘E’ Allocations
  • Northern Development Initiative Trust
  • Nechako-Kitamaat Development Fund Society
  • Burns Lake COMFOR
  • Trans Canada
  • Lakes District Airport Society

We would also like to thank the residents of the Village of Burns Lake, Electoral Area ‘B’ (Burns Lake Rural) and Electoral Area ‘E’ (Francois/Ootsa Lake Rural) for their support. Without the overwhelming turn-out of voters in favor of the project, as evidenced by the referendum results, this upgrade would not have been possible. Due to the grant funding received for this project, the amount of money needed to borrow to complete this project has been significantly reduced. Community support in the referendum originally allowed for borrowing funds in the amount of $675,000. We are very pleased to announce that, because of grants received for the project, this amount has been reduced to $166,715.

Congratulations are offered to L B Paving Ltd, the successful candidate from the BC Bid tender process. The work necessary to resurface the runway will be completed by September 30, 2016.

The completion of this project will ensure that Baker Airport continues to provide safe, reliable facilities for air access, which is essential to the development of the Lakes District.

“We are pleased to see this project underway, and are excited about the opportunities the improved facilities will offer to the residents.” ~ Reg Blackwell – President, Lakes District Airport Society

“After much hard work, it is with great pleasure that we celebrate the partnerships that have made this project possible. The runway resurfacing will help ensure the airport remains operational for medievac and emergency services and accessible for our residents and businesses.” ~ Bill Miller – Chair, Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako

“The Baker Airport is a vital asset to our community. Our residents rely on it for medical evac services as well as forest fire protection and emergency services. Resurfacing the runway will ensure the continued safety of the Lakes District and we are very grateful to the funding organizations for their support.” ~ Luke Strimbold – Mayor, Village of Burns Lake
