Choose 1 of the 5 Saturday Workshop Selections

Course 1 – Level One Registrations and Referrals Refresher – Deborah Jones-Middleton, Protective Services Manager, Peace River Regional District
This course describes the process for responding to and registering evacuees and providing them with referrals for food, clothing, and lodging. It also covers basic interviewing skills, dealing with people who are traumatized, and follow up. The course includes completion of the ESS File (Registration and Service Record) and Referral forms.

Course 2 – Sheltering Animals During a Disaster – Willow Eyford, Training Director, Pet Safe Coalition
Participants will learn about the feeding, cleaning, and general care of animals during an emergency/disaster, along with efficient shelter setup and operations. This course covers specific shelter operations, including intake procedures, safe animal handling techniques, safety issues for people and animals, and managing volunteers, as well as pre-emergency planning, and what to do after the emergency.

Course 3 – Psychological First Aid – Carolyn Sinclair, DPS Provincial Lead, Alternate & DPS Volunteer, Disaster Psychosocial Program
Psychological First Aid (PFA) is not therapy; it is a model of providing immediate practical support and empathy to individuals who are distressed. The goal of PFA is to facilitate resilience through education about coping strategies and available resources; humane supportive responses to a fellow human beings who are suffering and who may need support.

Course 4 – Leadership and Communications Skills – Alan Stebbing, Emergency Response Officer, Ministry of Environment
Emergency management professionals and volunteers with responsibilities for managing volunteer programs learn the fundamentals of volunteer management including recruiting, managing, and retaining volunteers. It also addresses issues such as risk management and liability, worker care, volunteer management software, and handling challenging volunteers.

Course 5 – Planning for People with Disabilities in Emergencies – Karen Martin, Program Coordinator, Disability Alliance BC
A course covering the day-to-day social, economic, and physical context of the lives of people with disabilities that create disaster-vulnerability. Participants will be introduced to the Functional Needs and CMIST frameworks. It also looks at understanding barriers to accessibility, the Duty to Accommodate, the BC Building Code and accessibility, and the BC Guide Dog and Service Dog Act.
