In 2016, a University of Northern British Columbia team of researchers performed a study entitled “Cash and Bioenergy Crop Feasibility for the Bulkley-Nechako Regional District (BNRD)”. This study determined whether specialty crops could be grown in the BNRD. Funding for this project was provided by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and the B.C. Ministry of Agriculture through the Canada-B.C. Agri-Innovation Program under Growing Forward 2, a federal-provincial-territorial initiative. The program is delivered by the Investment Agriculture Foundation of B.C. Funding and support for this project has also been provided by the Chan Sisters Foundation, Nak'azdli First Nations Band, and the Aboriginal Business Development Centre.
